Almost every ambitiuous business out there uses a range of software to complete the day-to-day tasks required to operate. A common complaint we hear is "the systems are great, but they don't talk to each other". 

This is where an API comes in. An API allows us to access a range of tools and datapoints to get systems talking to each other. However, not all APIs are made equal. Some are great, supporting lots of features and giving us options to push and pull data at will. Others have few features or can be overly rigid in their implementation.

When we need to patch systems that don't do everything we need out of the box, we can look to build Middleware. On top of getting the smooth business processes in place that we are looking for, there can be plenty of other benefits to using this strategy. 

• More control over the business logic  - timing of actions fired, modifying data before passing to system #2 etc
• Full sets of logs of all actions, including errors - which can also be used in other systems, security checks or reporting
• An easier path to switch out systems. For example, System #1 might be a finance package. Switching over to another finance package would be more straightforward, as other connections are kept on the middleware that is in use.

The key negative element to this approach is the increase in technology footprint for managing/maintaining.
