Content: your no.1 priority

Written by Gary Hides

The main purpose for anyone surfing the internet is usually to find information. As you’re the web site owner, it’s your job to provide that information. See our tips on managing your content.

Regular updates

If a recent visitor comes back to your site within a month and nothing has been added or changed, they may never come back again.

As your web site’s content is the main reason why its visitors land on the site in the first place, it would be a very good idea top keep that content fresh and regularly updated. If a recent visitor comes back to your site within a month and nothing has been added or changed, they may never come back again. You and I are exactly the same. I’d be willing to bet that practically all of the web sites you visit on a regular basis are updated at least monthly, if not more regularly.

Now: a few tips on how to provide your content.

Get to the point

Don’t fill your page with useless waffle and jargon. Get to the point and use clear simple language, this way your users will be able to see what information you’re offering and can decide if they want to look around some more. Reading on screen isn’t like reading a book or a magazine, it’s much more demanding on the eyes and as such, don’t expect your visitors read through your web site for hours on end. Sales and marketing talk is only going to put visitors off, avoid it where possible.

Break it down

As users are often only looking for one certain bit of information, break the content down so they can scan the page and check if your content is what they’re looking for. You can help the scannability of your page in various ways:

  • Put a summary at the top of the page
  • Use headings and sub heading to give an idea of what text is coming next
  • Make text bold, italic or coloured to make it stand out
  • Use links on important, meaningful words
  • Use lists where possible
  • Give some quotes and make them stand out

If all else fails

You should really be looking to keep your content short and simple, without being patronising. But if at the end of the day you can’t avoid having a super long article, then make it sure it has a printable version, or ask your web designer to make sure the page is printer friendly.
